National Review’s Andy McCarthy answers one question…
is there a “moderate” Islam?

The sad fact, the fact no one wants to deal with but which the Ground Zero mosque debate has forced to the fore, is that Qaradawi is a moderate. So is Feisal Rauf, who endorses the Qaradawi position — the mainstream Islamic position — that sharia is a nonnegotiable requirement. Rauf wins the coveted “moderate” designation because he strains, at least when speaking for Western consumption, to paper over the incompatibility between sharia societies and Western societies.

There is, then, in the final analysis, no distinction between ‘moderate’ and ‘mendacious.

Rush Limbaugh made today what I hope is a prescient quip: “There is no ICLU – Islamic Civil Liberties Union.” Not yet…

Update: Maggie ‘Liberty Belle‘ Thornton hits a homer over at The Camp of The Saints:

My position on this mosque that they are now trying to float as a community center, even though the developer says the mosque portion will hold 1,000 “worshippers,” is this: every radical in America will flock to this site. If Anwar Awlaki could safely reenter the U.S. he would blaze a trail to get to 51Park to shape the thinking of the Arab men in attendance, and to send prayers winging. Every imam wanting to motivate his career path, will want to preach from the top floor mosque, to cry out to Allah as the 1000 look out over their western trophy – still only a pit – after all these years. To think this will not be an American Mecca is to be naive.

We’ve heard Rauf in private – comments that were not intended for Western ears. As he gauges the Islamiscity (compliance with Shariah) of all countries, from his offices covering about 6 floors of the mosque for his Shariah Index Project, we can be certain that there is only one reason for this guage, and that is to figure out how to “up” every country’s quotient.

Moderate Muslims are those who are not pushed by their imams into extremism. What happens when that imam moves out of the neighbor. Muslims do not shop around for mosques the way we might shop around for a church.

With respect, I challenge such a notion of moderate. A moderate will challenge the pseudoprophet’s instructions to kill all Jews. She will challenge the warlord’s gross sexism and tolerance of slavery and child-abuse. She will reject the illiterate’s notion that Christians and Jews are apes and monkeys… She will challenge the entire bronze-age patriarchal manifest-destiny mentality.

I apologize for not adding Thanks! for your thoughts.

(I get rather cranky and forgetful when I’m reminded that my daughters are second-class humans and mere chattel…)

Please Ran, no apologies. I agree completely. The bottom line is that the things you mention are a part of Islam, if not apart of every Muslims life when living in the West. When an imam decides it will be a part of their daily lives, then it will be. There is no moderation of Islam under an imam who follows his Koran.
