Why Juan Williams Was Fired…

By way of background, here is the quote from Juan Williams on Bill O’Reilly:

“You know Bill… The point I was making was not that my grandmother harbors any racial animosity. But she is a typical white person. If she sees somebody on the street that she doesn’t know, there’s a reaction in her that doesn’t go away and it comes out in the wrong way.”

Nudge, wink.

Oh, that’s nicely done. So we should fire President Obama for saying almost exactly what Mr. Williams said? Fair enough.

I met Juan Williams years ago at a conference at Hillsdale College. We didn’t do more than exchange a few words, but my impression of him has always been of a reasonable man who’s on the verge of giving up idealistic notions for realistic ones. If a liberal is a conservative who hasn’t been mugged, maybe Mr. Williams has just had the mugging that will make him see daylight.

Interesting point. I wonder if he has the stuff of, say, David Horowitz, to really turn around based on principle? Williams has a statesman-like character. If he ever did evolve, he would become a tremendous threat to his old comrades.
