Operation Fast and Furious: A Quick ‘n Dirty Guide

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jaime Zapata

In the beginning…
Anti-gun groups and their supporters in the mainstream media had, for years, been pushing the story that “thousands” of “high-powered weapons” were being sold at gun shows, legitimate gun shops and by US distributors to Mexican drug and human smuggling cartels. “Mexican gun violence is escalating!” – and thus something needed to be done on the border.  Fast.

‘Operation Gunrunner’ program was initiated during G.W. Bush by the DOJ as a cooperation between various agencies and departments that contained specific projects under its general budget.

The original program was designed to track both legal and straw purchases from legitimate US gun stores and distributors, follow the buyers and their weapons to the border and interdict the lot before transition.  It was effective, though disappointingly modest:  Few guns – numbers in the dozens – and fewer criminals were nabbed annually.

One tactic employed was to allow a few guns to walk across the border to be followed in Mexico by US DEA field agents there, under cooperation of the Mexican government.  Your humble scribe knows not when this specific tactic began.  However…

The climate changed following the elections of 2008 and start of Eric Holder’s tenure at DOJ in 2009.  With Obama and Holder came a culture that held two fundamental beliefs: Firstly, that the Government must hold the monopoly on violence and security, and secondly, that subjects are not permitted to carry, apply or even to own effective means of forceful self protection.

It was obvious from the data gathered at that time by the DOJ that America was indeed not the primary source of the weaponry and ammunition employed by Mexican cartels.  All that was about to change.

On March 24, 2009 Deputy Attorney General David Ogden announced that under the direction of President Obama, and with the knowledge of Attorney General Eric Holder, the administration was undertaking a comprehensive plan to target Mexican gun cartels.”

Comprehensive indeed.  Here was born a new project under DOJs Gunrunner:  Operation Fast and Furious aka Project Gunwalker.

The new tactic was to allow more than a few guns to walk across the border. “More than a few” turned out to be quite literally thousands, many of which had been actually purchased using funds from the ATFs $10 million dollar ‘stimulus’ grant.

One can not prove intentional exacerbation of the violence in Mexico as a motive for such a massive release of weaponry across the border, though it is obvious that such an event plays directly to the myth previously established by the anti-gun cluster.  It would support proposed legislation and regulation aimed at limiting firearm ownership here in the US and further support proposed UN treaties with the purpose of gutting the Second Amendment.

Shame on the MSM for not making this a top story.

However, it is obvious, too, that such a large number of units could not possibly be followed or even traced by DEA agents in Mexico.  Whatever the intention or reasoning, the result is at least two US agents are murdered. The wholesale slaughter of more than 150 Mexican law enforcement personnel can all of them be traced directly to these guns.

On December 15, 2010 US Border Patrol Agent Brian A. Terry was murdered near Rio Rico, Arizona, “while attempting to apprehend a group of armed subjects. The suspects had been preying on illegal immigrants with the intent to rob them.”  Suspects were apprehended and the weapon seized.  The gun used was traced; it’s origin was the Gunrunner program.

ICE Special Agent Jaime Zapata was killed on February 15, 2011 and Agent Victor Avila was wounded.  The weapon used was traced to Dallas, also part of the Gunrunner release.

Note well that many who work for the US Border Patrol the ATF, DEA, ICE, DHS etc. were not thrilled with the orders coming downstairs.  These patriots blowing whistles are being fired.  May G-d bless the good guys – we are going to need them and they will need our protection.

William A. Jacobson sums it up: “Those involved in this tragic irony must be punished accordingly.  It is vital that the public comes to know who in the administration knew what and when they knew it.  Kudos to Congressman Issa for bringing this deadly scandal into the light.  Shame on the MSM for not making this a top story.

Excellent info. I was confused by GunRunner. Last week I saw something saying GunRunner was completely above-board and should not be confused with F&F. Now I get it.

Have you seen anything about Dianne Feinstein and F&F? I just posted on it. Don’t know how much of a story it is, but it looks like something to me. I linked this post.
