Newt and the Second Amendment

2011/12/22

Via William Jacobson:

“It is a political right of the deepest importance to the survival of freedom in America.” -Newt Gingrich, April 2011

There is one aspect of rights that many overlook, and that is responsibility: Every right has a concomitant moral duty. Newt almost gets there near the end. The duty of self-defense does not require all persons to carry, use or possess weapons, nor to even learn martial art.  It does, at a minimum, require us to uphold and respect our neighbors’ rights and duties, to leave them free to choose.

If you seek peace, seek first liberty.

Newt has a very persuasive advocate in William Jacobsen. He’s a Romney-hater to the extreme. That probably lights his fire to a certain degree. At this stage, I’m pretty ambivalent about the nominating process. I’m a Santorum guy who never expected him to do much. Its surprising how many people are still in. I mean, what the hell does Michelle Bachamann hope to achieve at this point? She’s proudly shat on every republican in the field repeatedly. Huntsman? Beuller. Beuller. Perry won’t last much longer. Wad shot and all that.

Romney remains the odds on nominee for the same reasons he’s always been the odds on favorite. He’s stayed out of the mud and had surrogates do the negative stuff against Newt. The next barrage of negative shit will be aimed at Ron Paul. It’s going to be an avalanche. I almost feel sorry for the cuddly little old goofball.

Another way of describing Romney’s campaign is that he’s holding three deuces. Newt has a pair of Kings. Paul has a pair of whatever they play poker with on the moon, and everyone else has a King high. Romney doesn’t need to bluff. He doesn’t have to do anything but wait. In the meantime, he’s pleased to see Paul or Newt get dropped down to drawing cards with the rest of the field. One thing people forget about Romney’s numbers is that his people have been his from the get. It’s solid support. They aren’t going anywhere. As his opponents drop, he’ll likely inherit their supporters by default. Don’t count Newt out, though. Romney is passively opposed by 2/3rds of republican voters. There is much room for mischief within that dynamic.

    That’s what I see anyway,
    Chuck.

      Interesting analysis, Chuck.
I’ve warmed greatly to Santorum in the last few weeks.

I’m disappointed in Michele: She seems to be going after everyone but Mitt. It started with the cheap shots at Palin. I find it immature and unnecessary.

Whomever the nominee becomes I will support, even if they stink… I’m surprised that someone like Cliff would stand on ideology rather than choose to brutally defeat Oh Bummer.
      . . .

HEY – my wife let me have a “special” Chanukah gift: a Charter Arms Pug in .44 Special.

      Cheers!

Picked up the Walther PPQ 9mm two weeks ago. Finest sidearm I’ve ever shot. Leaves the Glock behind choking in a dust cloud. Too bad the Bridgeport Range will be under renovation during your brief trip east, but at least we can re-group for a beer or two in our usual haunt. See ya soon.

BTW, I do hope you and family are all enjoying the Festival of Lights. G-d Bless!

That makes me homesick for Christmas at my in-laws. Somebody always got a new gun, and everybody got at least a box of ammo for a gun they already had. After opening gifts, we’d retire to the shooting range behind the house.

I too, am finding my attention drawn to Santorum as possibly the last person for whom I can vote without having to hold my nose.

Rick – it’s time to make your move, buddy.

LA: Merry Christmas! See you soon.

Heh! Steven, you’re making me feel “normal.” My daughter jokes about getting ammo as “birthday presents from her dad!”

Merry Christmas to you and your family. Thanks for your service!

Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, and Happy New Year to you and yours, Ran. Hope to see you sometime in 2012.

In that case, I encourage you to shoot an H&K P7, but if you’re that impressed with a Walther, you should probably put on a condom first. hehe The P7 is what an angel would shoot if they carried a sidearm. Personally, I like a 1911, but I’ve never shot a .45 that was anywhere near as nice to shoot as a P7. I’ve got a Sig 220 and as far as 45s go, it’s pretty cherry, but a P7 shoots like a bb gun by comparison.

I’ve always believed Santorum is the person to put our trust in. He is conservative through and through, but he won’t be our nominee. Another confirmation of that is that he, Bachmann and Huntsman apparently didn’t try to get the signatures to qualify for the Virginia ballot. It takes money to do so. We’re told that Perry and Newt got the signatures but some were disqualified, leaving them without the 10,000 needed. That leaves us only with Romney and Paul.

If Santorum, Bachmann and Huntsman are serious, they would certainly never not even try to qualify for Virginia. Never heard of such a thing. Never even heard of a serious candidate not qualifying anywhere unless they were a late entry. I’m thoroughly disgusted.

Having said all that, hope you and yours are having a blessed 6th Day of Hanukkah Ran.
