One of our bravest, who never made it back – 26 year-old Michael Kiefer – is recalled by Steven Givler.

Godspeed, Michael.

That afternoon we gathered at Shearith Israel on 70th Street for the daily Minha (afternoon) service.  No-one said anything.  Few greeted others.  Our prayers were somber, sober, the moment poignant.  Rabbi Angel extended the service with additional prayer.  No-one was in a hurry.  I went home that evening with the purpose to comfort my wife and daughters.

“Closure?”  Closure is for cowards.

That was a very bad day. Do you think we’ve used half-messures since?

Korea, Vietnam, and every armed conflict we’ve entered since WWII – half measures – and the results speak for themselves. The first sign we’re in for half-measures is the President fails to ask Congress to declare war, and it all goes downhill from there.

    Amen, gentlemen.
